Spend A Lot Of Time Outside? 3 Tips To Prevent Mosquitoes

If you and your family like to spend time outside during the warm months, the last thing you want to deal with is a lot of mosquitoes. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help prevent mosquitoes, three of which are listed below.

Remove Water

If you have standing water in your yard, this will attract mosquitoes. Mosquitoes also lay larvae in these areas, which means even more mosquitoes in your yard. Some places to look for standing water include old tires, pet bowls, children's toys, grills, patios, pool covers, buckets, drainpipe extensions, and much more.

If you have a slope in your yard and have standing water every time it rains, hire a landscape contractor to help with this. They can level out your yard to prevent this from happening.  You can also drill holes in the bottom of trash cans outside. This will allow water to drain out of them, instead of building up inside the trash can. the same thing goes for any type of recycling container that you use outside. Make it a habit to check for standing water weekly so you can remove it.

Maintain Gutters

If your gutters are full of debris, this can cause water to build up, and the mosquitoes may be drawn to the debris itself. This also causes problems for your home if water does not drain through the gutters properly.

Inspect the gutters regularly, especially during the fall months when a lot of leaves fall. When you start noticing debris, climb onto your roof and remove it. You can do this by hand or with a garden hose if there is a lot of debris. Ask someone to help you with this, as this can be dangerous. If you see any damage, hire a roofing contractor to repair the gutters.

Hire a Pest Control Company

One of the best ways to prevent mosquitoes is to hire a pest control company. They may install mosquito repellants. These repellants emit a liquid, vaporized chemical into the air that keeps mosquitoes away but will not harm you. More than one repellant will be installed outside in many cases.

The pest control contractor will also spray your yard with a chemical that kills mosquitoes and their larvae. Ask the contractor if they can use a chemical that does not kill grass.
