Staying Safe Around Pest Control

What Can You Do About Your Rodent Problem?

A rodent problem must be handled immediately if you want to avoid disease and further infestation. You will have to do more than just put some traps out. You have to make your home as uninviting as possible. To help you do this, here are some tips for rodent control:

Eliminate the Food

Rodents will only stay where they can eat. When it comes to food sources, you have to think beyond what is in your refrigerator and pantry. Rodents will go to great lengths to find food.

For instance, if you have a bird feeder outdoors, rats will climb to reach the food. They will also scavenge for food in your trash and eat from your compost. Rodents will even eat your pet's food.

Take the time to think about every possible food source and make sure it is safe and secure from the rodents. For instance, as soon as your pet is finished eating, toss what is left and clean out the food dish.

Get Rid of the Water

Another attraction for rodents is water. As with food, rodents will get water from any source they can find. They have no standards. For instance, rodents will drink out the gutters that are affixed to your home.

Look for any likely sources of water on your property and get rid of it. Do not forget to look for water in buckets, bird baths, and old tires. You also need to cover the water that is in your pet's water dish. There are automatic watering devices that can be used instead of dishes.

While looking for water sources, do not forget to check your plumbing. A leaky pipe in the basement could be all the water that rodents need.

Be Careful with Placing Rat Poison

If you are planning to use rat poison, there are a few things to remember. One of the most important is to ensure that it is not within the reach of children. If you have pets, you also do not want to put it where they can reach it.

You also need to be careful that you do not put it somewhere that would lead to rats dying inside your walls or in the attic. Ideally, the poison should be put in an enclosed space, such as a storage room.

A pest control company can offer you additional tips to help you get rid of rodents. You can also hire the company to provide regular services to prevent an infestation in the future.
