Staying Safe Around Pest Control

Eliminate The Earwigs From Your Life

There may be a small pest who have invaded your home that you are not even aware that you have. This pest is an earwig and although they are not poisonous or dangerous, anything that crawls inside your home is usually not a welcomed guest. Earwigs are normally found outside under rock, paving stones, logs, or even under the shady leaves of plants in your garden, but as the weather cools down they can become a nasty nuisance inside your home. The good news is, they are not that hard to get rid of.

Eliminate The Moisture In Your Home

Earwigs are attracted to cool, moist places such as your laundry room, your bathroom cabinets, or under your kitchen sink. Reduce the amount of moisture in your home by fixing leaks, and increasing the amount of ventilation you have in these spaces. Consider installing a dehumidifier in your basement or laundry room.

Inspect your gutters and downspouts. Make sure that rain water is draining away from your home and not directly down to your foundation. Consider installing extenders on your downspouts to carry the water out further from your home. A wide variety of these can be found at your local home improvement store.

Eliminate Their Hiding Spots

Remove piles of brush, lumber, piles of leaves, and even wood mulch from around the foundation of your home. Although it may be convenient to leave your firewood on the porch, or right outside the door, you are also inviting earwigs, as well as other pest to come in when you are not looking. Instead of wood mulch around the perimeter of your home, consider using the following:

  • Rock Mulch
  • Rubber Mulch
  • Pine Needles and other alternative forms of mulch

Not only will these help you to control and eliminate your weeds, and retain moisture, they will provide less food and breeding locations for earwigs, termites, and other pests who prefer to live in these types of materials.
